Technical Director Position Description

South East United FC (hereafter the ‘Club’) is one of the youngest football clubs in the country. Originally founded in November 2013 to provide youth development services to the broader south-eastern community, the Club has expanded rapidly, and now runs teams in the junior, youth and women’s leagues, and the Veto Men’s Southern Championship.

To consolidate this growth and prepare for the future, the Club now requires the appointment of a suitably qualified and experienced Technical Director.


To provide leadership in the technical development of the Club’s junior, youth and senior players and coaches, and to create a pathway from junior to senior level in accordance with the vision and culture of the Club. The key focus will be building the capabilities of all the Club’s players and coaches by developing and overseeing training programs in accordance with modern standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a youth development program to train male and female players from all the Club’s junior and youth teams (Under 12 to Under 18s);

  • Ensure the Club’s junior, youth and senior programs align with modern practices, including Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Football Tasmania (FT) standards;

  • Oversee and participate in at least one complete training session (junior/youth and seniors) each week, contribute to an inclusive, stimulating and fun environment, and provide support for coaches and players;

  • Oversee and assist in the recruitment, development and mentoring of coaches, including proactively supporting them to undertake formal education and training;

  • Continuously review programs and trends within FFA, FT, FIFA, other clubs and associations, within football generally, and within other sports, to ensure the Club’s programs and training resources are of the highest possible standards;

  • Oversee and assist in match day preparation and management for all the Club’s junior, youth and senior teams (at least three times for each team over the course of a full season), to ensure that each team has the support required to meet the Club’s expectations for on-field preparation, presentation, performance and behaviour;

  • Assist in the identification and retention of talented individuals, and to ensure they have the support, training and challenge required to help them reach their potential;

  • Promote the Club in the broader football community, building relationships with local schools and clubs, and representing the Club at relevant forums;

  • Assist in the preparation and organisation of Club events as required (such as the Sorell Summer Sixes), and to participate in promotional and recruitment activities;

  • Provide regular coaching reports to the Club Committee, offering feedback and suggestions, and identifying issues;

  • Identify opportunities to expand Club operations by organising events or programs (e.g. school holidays clinics, advanced skills sessions, etc);

  • Deliver a post-season review for the Club’s AGM, and provide recommendations and plans for changes for the next season, including planning pre-season activities;

  • Proactively pursue opportunities to recruit new players, coaches and volunteers;

  • Undertake other relevant duties as directed by the Club Committee.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • Some formal coaching accreditation (minimum community course, such as FFA Youth / Game Training certification) and experience;

  • Full driving licence and own transport;

  • Working with Vulnerable People registration (or ability to quickly acquire this).

Desirable Requirements

  • Advanced coaching accreditation (FFA ‘C’ or ‘B’ Licence);

  • Commitment to undertake further advanced coaching accreditation.


Note: Preference will be given to candidates who are willing to commit to this role for a minimum period of three years.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the successful development and delivery of advanced football training and coaching programs;

  2. Exceptional organisational skills, including excellent time management and attention to detail;

  3. Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups, build strong working relationships within the Australian football community, and represent the Club faithfully at various forums;

  4. Proven leadership ability, including the capacity to create and manage development pathways for male and female junior, youth and senior football players and coaches;

  5. Solid computer proficiency, including the ability to communicate via email, SMS and Facebook/Messenger, and the use of spreadsheets and word processing packages.

Terms and Conditions

  • Fixed-term, non-contract;

  • Initial appointment will be from point of acceptance to December 2020, with the option to extend being ratified each year at the AGM;

  • 6-10 hours each week on site, to include regular attendance at training and at least one match each week, plus other events and meetings as required;

  • Flexibility is essential for some planning and preparation work in own time, and to be available on weekends to provide support for the Club’s teams and coaches;

  • Some intrastate travel may be required;

  • A salary package will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Additional outcomes and performance related bonuses may be negotiated, while there are also opportunities to boost income by creating initiatives to expand the Club’s operations or player base. Subsidised registration may also be included;

  • The Club is prepared to support the successful applicant in obtaining advanced coaching accreditation.
